Cutting Edge Festival 2016

Every October, during Oslo Innovation Week, Oslotech AS and Inven2 AS organize the nonprofit Cutting Edge festival. This year, Waag's open Wetlab will be present at the festival with our projects Pet shop, DIY Antibiotics and Biotic Gaming. In a special room, Pieter van Boheemen and Xiamyra Daal will give DIY bio workshops.

About Cutting Edge
The main objective of the festival is to show how research, education, science and technology combined have a huge potential for value creation for our society, businesses and industries. Therefore all the talks, workshops and debates during the festival revolve around this. We have gathered a broad spectrum of people doing basic research, via commercialization projects, to new startup companies and given them a stage – the same stage.

Pet shop: microbes for sale
Waag has a biobank full to bursting with friendly, adorable micro-organisms. At the Pet shop, their microbes are on sale! Bacteria, fungi, molds, yeasts, and algae. You can buy these tiny cuties as micropets and experience the fun reward of caring for these tiny creatures. Wake up every morning and be welcomed by the enthusiastic growth of your flock...

Waag strives to make biotechnology more accessible to society. Our lab is housed in the tower of one of Amsterdam's medieval buildings and is full of incubators, petri dishes, and microbes. In our Open Wetlab, we (along with artists, hackers, designers, activists and scientists) work to open up biotechnology.

Waag has been working to open up closed systems since 1994 with the advent of their “digital city” (the first public, social use of the internet in the Netherlands). Since then, the organisation has dedicated itself to a philosophy of opening up the black boxes of closed technology: software, hardware, and even methodologies.
