Waag @ Dutch Design Week 2016

In October of each year, Dutch Design Week (DDW) takes place in Eindhoven. The biggest design event in Northern Europe presents work and ideas of more than 2,500 designers to more than 275,000 visitors from home and abroad. Waag is present this year with multiple projects!

The main exhibition, 'The making of your world', shows our DIY project Finger splint. The Making of Your World shows the complicated world behind products we use. The guiding principles in compiling the exhibition were the experiences of DDW ambassador Bas van Abel and the issues he faced in making a sustainable telephone, Fairphone, a former project of Waag.

Just Things Foundation
Why does my refrigerator know my birthday?

Our project Urban AirQ (Amsterdam Smart Citizens Lab) is part of an exhibition about the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT certainly opens the door to a lot of opportunities, but also to many design challenges like privacy, security and business-model issues. This exhibition guides you through the principles for responsible design within IoT products. We show you real-life best practices as well as newly commissioned speculative products illustrating how balanced and honest design can be done in this field.

Open daily from 11.00-18.00 hrs.

Get involved: Experiment in creative labs
MakerSpaces, innovation labs, city labs and workshops are for many people a realm that remains unfamiliar, despite the fact that nowadays dozens of labs are active throughout the Netherlands and beyond. In this morning session on Tuesday 25 October, Frank Kresin (Waag) enters into discussion with various labs about their role and position in society, and about their motivation for setting up an open experimental space.

Research & Design: design-driven research
On Friday 28 October, Dick van Dijk (research director) will participate in a morning session. How can design-driven research be implemented strategically? The focus will be on the distinctive character of an integral design approach, addressing various research methods and ways in which outcomes, knowledge and experience can best be shared and rendered effective.

Making School
Making School reseraches the future of vocational eduction. For which professions are the next generations of students educated? What kind of learning environment and methods should be applied? Waag is present on this expo with the Platform Maker Education and we show our new Fabschoolino.

There is also an active programme of workshops, lectures, debates, and excursions at this stand. At the School Workshop (Friday 28 October 12.00-14.00 uur) the expo will be used as a workspace for maker education. With keynotes by: Daniel de Bruin and Bastiaan de Nennie (tbc).

Bas van Abel (Fairphone, earlier Waag) is one of thee ambassadors of Dutch Design Week this year. He was the Creative Director at Waag, one of the initiators of Fablab Amsterdam, and is co-author for the book Open Design Now. With Fairphone, Van Abel is working towards a new industrial standard for honest and sustainable products. This year he received a Momentum for Change Award from Ban Ki Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations.
