In this workshop, participants will build a algal bioreactor and experiment with different kinds of algae, such as spirulina and chlorococcum, within the context of a discussion about “superfoods”.
Participants will learn how to culture their own superfood “pets” at home. We will prepare mediums for our algae species and discuss and build the best possible setups for the production of our algal pets, which will allow participants to get started creating their own setups at home.
Spirulina (also known as Arthrospira) was used as a food source by the Aztecs and is widely known today as a “superfood”. Superfoods are a heavily debated topic. How “super” are these foods in reality? And what can you do with them? Throughout the evening, we'll probe these questions whilst showing participants how to grow their own algae. We invite amateurs, artists, and designers to experiment, share ideas about health and food, and come up with new concepts for growing food and healthy living.

Red Light Pet Shop
Waag is opening the world's first pop-up microbial pet shop in the heart of Amsterdam's Red Light District. After hosting two successful events in 2015—at the Dutch Design Week and the Museum Night Amsterdam—we've decided to open our biobank to the public for three whole weeks at the Schatjes Gallery!
In the Red Light Pet Shop, our curated collection of bacteria, fungi, and algae will be available for purchase. Caring for these creatures is fun, educational, and highly rewarding! So come pick up some of our cutest micro-pets and wake up each morning to the sight of a happy colony. And remember: if you take good care of your pets, one day they may just take care of you.
