During our lives we age. But what exactly is this process of ‘getting older’? And why do some people age faster than others? During this workshop you will go into the lab and investigate the tardigrades. Subsequently, using bioinformatics we will have a look at the tardigrade DNA and compare it with human DNA and we will end the workshop by discussing what you think of ageing, longevity and what adaptations are legitimate to improve our lives.

Waag's Open Wetlab will be present at the OuiShare Fest 2015 in Paris. Pieter van Boheemen will give a presentation on "Peer-to-peer education & citizen science track". OuiShare Fest is a three-day festival about the collaborative economy, taking place at the Cabaret Sauvage in Paris from May 20-22, 2015.

 

A smooth flight from Amsterdam (during which clear skies enabled me to gaze at the frozen Canadian tundra for hours) took Chloé Rutzerveld and I to sunny Austin. We came to Austin to present our Open Wetlab and its activities at the SXSW Trade Show. An Open Wetlab at the Trade Show seemed like a strange combination (as we have no conventional trade), but this provided all the more conversation with the passing audience.

On September 26th, the international KiiCS Award Ceremony on Arts & Science will take place at the Discovery Festival Amsterdam. Saturday 21 June, artist Anna Dumitriu will lead a hands-on workshop around the theme of her "Romantic Disease" exhibition: the world of tuberculosis. During this edition of Do It Together Bio we work with possibly pathogenic bacteria and discuss the advances in clinical microbiology.

 

This evening of Do It Together Biology is all about using vegetables and organisms for health and food in the comfort of your own home. However, this will not be your average home gardening night. Green science and art take over. A Super Food Bioreactor, the power of Spirulina and air purifying plants take the scene.

The challenge of the 6th Do It Together Bio meetup can be summarized in one simple question: Can molecular genetics and biology be done on a computer? Our way of finding out was be giving it a try. So on Friday May 24 dozens of gathered in the Theatrum Anatomicum, armed with laptops, ready to reprogram cells, assembly synthetic DNA, sketch metabolic pathways and simulate cellular behavior.

 

Create your own bioart project growing yeast! During this 3-day edition of Do It Together Bio with Dr. Jennifer Willet you will learn how to cultivate samples of yeast from your local environment. The exhibition takes place at the official opening of our Open Wetblab. The workshop is hosted at Amstel Park and at the Open Wetlab at the Waag on 19, 20 and 21 June.

 

During this meetup you will learn how to design your own genes using a genetic open-source computer-assisted-design (CAD) tool (not as hard as it sounds!). Step by step we will isolate a piece of living code from a natural organism, adjust it to our own preferences, watermark it with the Open Wetlab DNA label, build a new synthetic light-induced genetic circuit and execute the code.

 

On Wednesday, April 27th it was time for the 5th edition of Do it Together Bio. The event was led by Laura Cinti and Howard Boland who are co-founders of the C-Lab collective and also winners of the latest Designers & Artists 4 Genomics Award. It was a diverse event that included theory, practice, experimentation and discussion around bio-art, synthetic biology, magnetic bacteria and genetic modification regulation and lab safety.

In Do it Together Bio #4 op 3 april werkten we met Vibrio Ficheri, bacteriën die licht geven, maakten 3D-prints met levend materiaal en bouwden we een bioprinter.

Op vrijdag 16 november bouwen we verder aan het bouwen Open Wetlab in de Waag. Hier werken we samen met doe-het-zelf biologen aan nieuwe machines, technieken en protocollen. Zodat iedereen met interesse in biologie en biowetenschap in ons lab aan de slag kan.

 

Op vrijdag 25 mei 2012 vond de vierde DIY Bio in de Waag plaats. Na drie succesvolle en goed bezochte afleveringen die behoorlijk wat pers trokken, was dit er een aflevering waar behalve gepraat eindelijk ook gewerkt werd.

 

Monthly meetup of biohackers open for anyone who’s interested in DIY Biology. Our goal is to bring together an eclectic mix of people from different backgrounds, share knowledge, spark discussions on biotechnological topics and eventually do it ourselves together. Some solids and liquids will be provided.
