Following last year’s successful Data4Food hackathon with UN World Food Programme, DataMission invites you to their next hackathon with Red Cross Netherlands. The hackathon will take place on Saturday 20th May 2017 at Waag (Makers Guild, first floor) in Amsterdam.
About Red Cross Netherlands
The Red Cross Netherlands is part of the largest humanitarian network in the world: the International Red Cross Movement. The Netherlands Red Cross Society seeks to prevent and alleviate human suffering and to improve the situation of vulnerable people. Red Cross helps, protects and takes care of people who are victims of war, conflict and disaster.
The Netherlands Red Cross Data Team strives to shape the future of humanitarian aid by converting data into understanding, and put it in the hands of humanitarian relief workers, decision makers and people affected, so that they can better prepare for and cope with disasters and crises.
Hackathon
We will share more details with you shortly. As a teaser: one of the challenges will focus on a machine learning model for typhoons in the Philippines that the Red Cross has developed. Teams are challenged to improve the machine learning model, either by improving the algorithm performance, or to find new data or new features in existing data, to improve the prediction outcomes. The second challenge will focus on visualisation and storytelling.
To best facilitate your one day hacking on 20 May, a pre-event will take place on Monday evening 15 May (location: GoDataDriven, Wibautstraat 202, 1091 GS Amsterdam). The Red Cross data team will introduce their challenges, bring you up to date on the work they’ve done themselves and give you access to the datasets. Furthermore the teams will be formed. The pre-event will provide you with all the ingredients to get a head start! We highly recommend you to attend the pre-event as well.
