PhDO 7: Labyrinth Psychotica

What is it like to be in psychosis? Within the trajectory of an artistic research PhD, our former artist in residence Jennifer Kanary has explored several psychosis simulation projects and analyzed them against the descriptions of those with experience of psychosis. Friday November 30, we dedicate the network event PhDO entirely to her project Labyrinth Psychotica.

In recent years, there have been several psychosis simulators that have been developed as teaching and awareness environments for mental health workers, police and students. These multi-media projects aim to help professionals become more empathic towards their patients, as well as help friends and families to better understand what their loved ones are going through. But there is room for improvement in the design of these projects.

Jennifer Kanary’s research has led to the project Labyrinth Psychotica in which not only area's of improvement are proposed, but are manifested in artistic research results, by allowing a person to investigate the question: 'What is it like to be in psychosis?' in the form of do-it-yourself-psychosis-kit experiences: The Wearable and The Labyrinth. The Wearable is an interactive augmented Reality Cinema walk and The Labyrinth is a Multimedia Interactive Labyrinth walk. Both projects use cutting edge technology to simulate different aspects of psychotic experiences such as audio and visual hallucinations, as well as disorientation in time and space and loss of sense of self.
