Textile Dialogue: working in this industry?

As part of the TextileLab Amsterdam every month Textile Dialogues takes place, an in-depth program in which we explore the possibilities for the fashion, textile and clothing industry. During this second Textile Dialogue “Working in this industry? On our conditions" we will discuss different approaches to a more fair and sustainable industry.

More and more people working in the fashion, textile and clothing industry want something else than the compelling system of set seasons, new collections, unconscious consumption, exploitation and waste. They are looking for other ways to work and collaborate, other ways to design, other ways to relate to our garments, other ways to build their collections and other ways to make and produce. All aiming for an industry that is less polluting, less demanding and less unfair, we’ll listen to a few inspiring people in an informal setting. What is their story? What are their drivers? What problems do they come across? What possibilities do they see? After the talks, there’s time to discuss the different approaches towards sustainability in the broadest sense.

Guest speakers:

  • Carlien Helmink – Studio JUX
  • Janne Kromhout – Min Design
  • Veerle Luiting – Concept & strategy developer sustainable fashion
  • Peter van Akkeren – Saint Basics
  • Annemieke Koster – Textielstad Enschede

The 10 sustainable strategies from TED (Textiles Environment Design) research project are food for thought during the discussion.

  1. Design to minimise waste
  2. Design for recycling/upcycling
  3. Design to reduce chemical impact
  4. Design to reduce energy and water use
  5. Design that explore clean and better technologies
  6. Design that looks at models from nature and history
  7. Design for ethical production
  8. Design to replace the need to consume
  9. Design to dematerialise and develop systems and services
  10. Design activism
