Urban areas are places where multiple societal challenges intersect and it is often at city level that innovative responses are being designed and tested. New ideas are being explored by a range of actors - public, private, non-profit organisations, and individuals – in collaborative efforts and in neutral spaces – called 3rd spaces – where city makers can meet to exchange on ideas or projects.
In the Systemic Urban Research and Innovation Lab-session we want to test a multi-level 3rd space by bringing in the EU level on an equal footing with the local actors and collaborate to solve urban innovation challenges.
This two-day event brings together European Commission Urban Policy Officers, city-makers and innovators, city organisations, and other urban stakeholders from multiple cities across Europe, to discuss the development of an urban policy transformation lab.
The objective is to understand what should be the key functions and features of a multi-level 3rd space in which EU policy officers and all relevant urban stakeholders could work on urban challenges and identify new areas for research and innovation in cities.
The lab-session is a pilot experiment as a follow-up of the Lab Connections event organised by the JRC Policy Lab, where DG RTD provided a Challenge on 'Connecting digital, physical, natural and social solutions for cities', during a session moderated by Waag.
