Almost everyone who is online knows the problem: before you know it you will have dozens of online accounts - but how to get rid of them? Even if the procedure is relatively easy, the right link might not be simple to discover. Many companies use dark pattern techniques to make it difficult to find how to delete your account. JustDelete.me aims to be a directory of urls to enable you to easily delete your account from web services.
Justdelete.me has four categories that are colour-coded to indicate the difficulty level of account deletion:
- Easy - Simple process
- Medium - Some extra steps involved
- Hard - Cannot be fully deleted without contacting customer services
- Impossible - Cannot be deleted
It's hard to understand that this last category actually exists, you just cannot delete those accounts (so you better avoid creating them in the first place). In this category are for example Pinterest, Starbucks and Steam, but strangely enough also Wordpress and Wikipedia, both open source campaigners. The majority is in the green category, where it just takes one step to delete an account.
Justdelete.me is aimed at the larger international websites. A localized Dutch version might certainly be helpful (which developer wants to go for it?).
