Waag explores and designs alternative forms of social media

At the start of 2025 Waag, together with Bits of Freedom, PublicSpaces, DeGoedeZaak and Noorderlicht, launched the MakeSocialsSocialAgain campaign, calling on governments, organisations and citizens to actively explore alternatives for big tech and transition to open, public and decentralised social media platforms, such as Mastodon and Pixelfed. The campaign was launched in response to the ever-increasing intertwining of big tech and political power, which is rightly leading to growing criticism and calls for alternatives that promote public values, autonomy and innovation. 

As a response Waag launched Public Nodes: an ambitious programme to regain control of our social media platforms.
