Opening 'The Romantic Disease' exhibition

Join us for the festive opening of 'The Romantic Disease' on Friday 20 June at 20.00 hours. Anna Dumitriu, the artist, will be present. The exhibition takes the form of an art/science investigation into mankind’s strange relationship with ‘the Romantic Disease’ Tuberculosis (TB) from early superstitions about the disease, through the development of antibiotics, to the latest research into whole genome sequencing of bacteria. It features artworks made with a combination of textile art, altered historic objects, and biological matter including sterilised strains of mycobacteria.

'The Romantic Disease' runs from 21 June to 27 July (Thursday to Sunday 11.00 – 17.00) at the Theatrum Anatomicum in the Waag Building. On Saturday 21, Anna hosts a Do It Together Bio workshop around the theme.

The first exhibition took place at Watermans in London, UK, between January and March 2014. It now tours Europe, from Waag in Amsterdam to the Art Laboratory Berlin in Germany and a special installation at The Picasso Museum in Barcelona.

The Romantic Disease exhibition at the Theatrum Anatomicum is part of The Future of Art and Science Collaborations program of Waag that is supported by Stichting Doen and the Mondriaan Foundation. The Future of Art and Science Collaborations is a collaboration between The Netherlands Study Centre for Technology Trends, The Royal Academy of Arts, Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science, The Arts and Genomics Centre, Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten and Waag.
