Bert Spaan (developer) and Job Spierings (project manager) of Waag will attend the Code for America Summit in Oakland, California (US) that will be held from 30 September until 2 October 2015. Waag is participating in the Code for All program with Code for NL.

 

Ivonne Jansen-Dings will participate in a panel during the Code for All Summit in New York on 30th July 2015 on behalf of Waag and Code for the Netherlands (codefor.nl).

 

The Open Knowledge Festival 2014 will be a shared, immersive experience - you can learn, listen, brainstorm, make, hack, watch and explore. This year, these conversations will be based around three narrative streams; Knowledge, Tools and Society. The workshop 'Code a Difference' will explore how ‘fellowships’ can contribute to solving civic challenges and creating a sustainable innovation ecosystem within cities.

 

At the Open Knowledge Conference (OK Con) in Geneve, the Code for Europe fellows will demonstrate their final results. And the call for new fellows for the period 2013/2014 will be launched.

 

During this hands-on workshop we will show you what is going on inside a toy car, how to hack the remote control and make the car follow a line independently! We will work in small groups, with sensors, arduinos and soldering irons.

Code for Eindhoven is part of Code for NL, a project of Waag in which people with a technological background are placed within local governments. In Eindhoven, three so-called code fellows will start this month: Bas Biezemans from Eindhoven, Marcel Goethals from Rotterdam and Milo van der Linden from Vught.

 

Last month, Dutch and Finnish fellows and policy makers met during the Mindtrek conference and a code fellow training in Finland. The aim of this exchange was to compare routines and share successes. On March 6th, Waag launched Code for NL: an initiative that connects innovative fellows with semi-government professionals. One understands the latest technology while the other can provide the administrative knowledge. Together, they can create concrete ICT solutions to tackle social problems—the best of both worlds!

Scratch, the MIT programming tool for children, celebrates its birthday every third Saturday in May each year and in the Waag on 17 May 2014 you can try it our for yourself in many workshops.

 

What better way of acquiring new ways of working than by simply doing it and learn form the experience? Without consciously knowing it, this is the principle behind the Code for Europe Fellowship program.

For our project Apps for Europe, Marleen Stikker spoke with Eurocommissionar Neelie Kroes about open data, the new European legislation regarding this topic and opportunities that releasing information creates.

 

The project Code for Europe strives to change the way in which government handles IT projects. Or better yet, Code for Europe wants to solve city/civic challenges by building straightforward IT solutions, such as apps. Now there is a bold mission statement.

 

On April 17 2013, the three Code for Europe fellows that are working on challenges for Amsterdam, will demonstrate what they have achieved so far.

 

Programming is no longer restricted to programmers! On March 6, 2013 we held a workshop programming with Scratch in our series Fabschool Kids. Scratch is an application which learns children programming in a playful way.

 

On the 28th of March 2013, the three Code for Europe fellows that are working on challenges for Amsterdam, will demonstrate what they have achieved so far. How close are they to solving the challenges that they started working on a couple of months ago?

 

Our C4EU fellows arrived last week on January 14. For the project Code4EU, they will work on three challenges that the city of Amsterdam has mapped for them.

 

The 'Reisradar App', developed by a team of Waag is nominated for further development within the 'Ontwijk de File'.

 

The City of Amsterdam welcomes Ohyoon Kwon, Piotr Steininger and Giovanni Maggini as fellows for the Code4EU project. The coming nine months they will be working on innovative and smart apps that change the way governments work for their citizens.

 

In the Express to Connect project, the concept design and the technical implementation of the game prototypes is run by Waag. Taco van Dijk works at Waag as a back-end developer on the technology behind the E2C game. His team consists of concept developers, graphical designers, software developers and a sound designer.

 

Cities face a scenario characterized by shrinking budgets, increasing demands of services from their citizens and the need to reinvent themselves in their quest to become Smart Cities.

 

KeyWorx was an extensible application framework that has been under development at Waag for a number of years.
