NRC published an article on corporate use of Meta's WhatsApp on 16 February 2025. In the article, Sander van der Waal, research director at Waag Futurelab, warns against using the app and recommends switching to an alternative such as Signal:
"As far as Van der Waal is concerned, Signal is a suitable alternative. ‘It is a non-profit organisation and much more secure. Less data is generated, the data is then not used, and you could - for the techies among us - control the source code and the server, because it is open source. And it's user-friendly: everything you do in WhatsApp can be done there too.’ Waag Futurelab has therefore been urging people to switch for years. ‘I actually find it incomprehensible that companies are still using WhatsApp internally,’ he says."
