Recently a film crew visited the Waag for a documentary series about the Golden Age, in which the viewers will be taken through the history. The part of the series that features our building will be probably be broadcasted on Dutch television on 19 February 2013 at NTR/VPRO.
Presenter Hans Goedkoop describes the 17th century in his programme proposal as a mirror of the current Netherlands. Dutch society in those days was also characterised by strong dynamics, that blew away the the old and trusted. Globalisation, immigration, tolerance, fundamentalism, populism, consumerism, financial crises, stock market and media hypes: all those phenomena were visible at that period for the first time in an urgent manner.
Editor Marja Ros says about it: “Rembrandt and Vermeer, the VOC an the war against Spain, these are the stereotypes that every Dutchmen will tell you when hearing the words 'Golden Age’. We want to nuance that image. We look beyond that obvious image and will return to the historical reality of that time."
The Golden Age was a time of plenty, when everything seemed to succeed and when art and science could flourish as never before.
The series will be broadcasted starting 11 December on channel Nederland 2. A nice teaser can be found on Facebook.
