Register for the free online course Youth, Democracy & Technology: Participatory Approaches for Critical Consciousness.
Too often, young voices are overlooked in decision-making. They are finding new ways to participate through activism, social media, and art. Explore in this MOOC (Massive Online Open Course) how young people engage with democracy, the challenges and opportunities of digital technologies, and the role of arts and activism in creating change.
Through 7 modules, the MOOC provides critical tools for educators, activists, and young people to:
- understand youth participation in democracy (formal, informal, and transnational)
- reflect on digital technology’s impact on rights like privacy, expression, and access to information
- explore eco-social justice and participatory approaches to reclaim civic power
- harness the arts as catalysts for social change
- learn from Critical ChangeLabs as case examples of youth empowerment
Waag worked on the modules entitled “Art as a catalyst for social change” and “Technology and justice: impact on eco-social equality”.

Critical ChangeLab
This MOOC is the result of the project Critical ChangeLab, in which Waag is researching the relationship between young people and democracy and, with that, the future of European democracy in the 21st century. Waag believes that maker education is an excellent way to teach young people to think critically and work together. By discovering, testing and trying, you learn to express your own creativity. Waag investigates how a maker mindset and 21st-century skills can help people increase their sense of ownership and better find their place in society.
