BlindSquare, an augmented reality app that uses audio technology and crowd-sourced open data to help visually-impaired people move around and get the most out of their cities, won the first prize of the Open Cities App Challenge at the Smart Cities Expo in Barcelona. The app's creator Ilkka Pirttimaa took the € 3000 first prize at the event designed to find the apps that best use the potential of open data to improve the lives of citizens today. Also the apps PayPark from Spain and BikeCityGuide from Austria received an honorary mention by the jury. The next round of the Open Cities App Challenge will be launched next May 2013.
