Developers meet-up: Alternatives for app distribution

We welcome all app developers to join this mini lecture and workshop on the future of our mobile ecosystem. With special guest: Licaon Kter, developer @ F-droid; an open-source, decentralized appstore

For the past 10 years, mobile ecosystems have been governed by Big Tech like Apple and Google. This needs to change. The mobile landscape is slowly changing and diversifying, with operating systems like e/OS and Ubuntu Touch, as well as app stores like F-Droid offering open-source and ethical alternatives to Apple and Google.

But how can we grow this movement and encourage more app developers to build open-source apps that respect the values of end-users? What do software developers need or want when building and distributing apps? And how could these needs inform alternative ways for app distribution?

This is what we are researching in the EU H2020 project Mobifree. In this workshop, you are invited to discuss your experiences with app development and distribution, the enablers and blockages you are facing, and what your ideal alternatives would look like.

The workshop will focus on app distribution via various app stores (e.g., App Store, Playstore, F-Droid, Aptoide) for different operating systems (e.g., iOS, Android, or Ubuntu Touch).

So, are you searching for new ways to distribute your apps that align with the values of your initiative? Are you developing apps for different mobile operating systems like iOS, Android, or Ubuntu Touch? Or are you a developer who wants to avoid Apple and Google, or develop FOSS apps?

Then join us on the 25th of July to help diversify the mobile landscape!
