Take back what’s yours.
Patchworkgirl takes you live to Telegram groups aimed at exposing and shaming young women.
When Jantine was 16 years old, the nude photos she took for her boyfriend ended up on GeenStijl. A classmate shared them with several people and soon after, they were hanging throughout the school. When Cyrina was 13 years old, she made a sexy video for a boy. A day later, the video went around the two high schools in her village.
The two girls lost control over their own nude images. In this performance, Jantine reconstructs, considers and rewrites the events of the time, together with six teenage girls. Through a voice-over, Cyrina also shares her story. With A.I. artist Noelía, they conjure up Patchworkgirl: a virtual girl who first embodies 'male fantasy' but then opens her mouth. What will she tell visitors of the Telegram groups? And what are the reactions when she stops following the unwritten rules?
Instead of exhibiting only victims, Patchworkgirl also turns the spotlight on perpetrators. A performance that is equally vulnerable and powerful, about sexting, exposing, slutshaming, guilt, power, revenge, empowerment and owning your sexuality.
At TM Amsterdam, the stories of the location and of the residents of Amsterdam are the starting point of an investigation and performance we create. In Patchworkgirl, six young women explore how to hold your own in a world where your private images can go viral at lightning speed.
