On Wednesday 22 April, Waag's director Marleen Stikker took part in a hearing at Dutch parliament to share her vision on the corona app, proposed by the Ministry of Health. During the hearing, Marleen shared her concerns on the proposed app, the lack of societal debate about it and the hastily process that should lead to the implementation of the app. 'The open process arranged by the ministry is worth a compliment. But I strongly dislike the self-overestimation of the IT world and app makers who think the app will be a quick fix. Stating that the app is the way to get out of lockdown, is careless and leads to false expectations. Get the quest for an app out of the technological domain and make it a societal quest. The social intelligence and responsibility of Dutchmen should be a focal point,' she stated.
Op woensdag 22 april was Marleen Stikker te gast in de Tweede Kamer om haar visie op de corona-app te delen. Tijdens de hoorzitting deelde ze haar zorgen over de voorgestelde app, het gebrek aan maatschappelijk debat en het gehaaste proces waaruit de app nu moet voortkomen. Naast Marleen waren ook Evelyn Austin, directeur van Bits of Freedom, en Bas Filippini, directeur Privacy First, te gast bij de hoorzitting.

Marleen Stikker: 'Het open proces dat het ministerie heeft ingericht is een compliment waard. We hebben nu een discussie over technologie in Nederland en dat is echt bijzonder. Normaal gebeurt dit achter gesloten deuren in achterkamertjes.
Maar ik hekel ook de zelfoverschatting van de IT-wereld en de app-bouwers, die denken dat ze het met een app 'wel even fixen'. De app werd mede door minister Hugo de Jonge en premier Mark Rutte gebracht als dé oplossing om uit de lockdown te kunnen komen. Dat is onzorgvuldig en daarmee schets je valse verwachtingen. Automatische nabijheidsmeting via Bluetooth moet op basis van de huidige kennis en aanwezige expertise van tafel.
We moeten een proces inrichten waarbij we eerst vaststellen welk probleem we willen oplossen. Dat moet multidisciplinair gebeuren en daar zal de maatschappij actief bij moeten worden betrokken. Daarna kunnen we kijken welke rol technologie daar eventueel in kan spelen. Haal dit vraagstuk weg uit het puur technologische domein en maak er een maatschappelijk vraagstuk van. Neem daarbij de sociale intelligentie en verantwoordelijkheid van de Nederlanders als uitgangspunt.’
