Esmee GeerkenResearch Fellow
Esmee Geerken is an artist and earth scientist, combining both disciplines in her artistic research and design practice, in which she questions our experience of the material environment. Esmee graduated from Gerrit Rietveld academy and looked at the microscopic shells of unicellular marine organisms for her PhD in geochemistry at the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ). As research fellow at Waag she will look deeper into the symbiosis between animal and mineral, aiming to form new materials through biomineralization mechanisms. She will work with Lucas Evers and planet B.
Her work was shown in exhibitions and performed/lectured at, among other places, WhyNot Festival at W139, De Ruimte, FLAM, Huize Frankendael Museumnacht Amsterdam, Goldschmidt (FR), Gordon Research Conference on Biomineralization (US) and JpGU-AGU meeting (JP). She has been a guest researcher at the Caribbean Netherlands Science Institute and Japanese Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology.
