Smart Citizens workshop and lecture @ Waag Open Space
What are the real levels of air pollution around your home or business? And what about noise pollution? And humidity? Now imagine that you could know them, share instantly and compare with other places in your city, in real time. How could this information help to improve our environmental quality?
On 19 September 2013, Waag and the Amsterdam Economic Board organize a workshop and lecture about the Smart Citizen Kit with low-cost sensors. The kit, developed in Barcelona, measures air composition (CO and NO2), temperature, light intensity, sound levels, and humidity. The kit looks like a ‘house’ that you can place near your window, for instance. The kit exists of a hardware device, a website where data is collected, an online API and a mobile app.
Lecture and discussion
Tomas Diez (founder of the initiative) will talk about the developments and possibilities of the Smart Citizen Kit. His experiences in Barcelona will be shared and we'll discuss the potential benefits for Amsterdam.
Do you want to have a look into the technical specs or build a kit yourself? During the Urban Innovation Week, you can also join our workshop and lecture where you learn to build your own sensor and get to know how the Smart Citizen kit works. The workshop is a hands-on session to get experienced with the equipment. We’ll investigate how we can build a real Smart City, by Smart Citizens.

You can join the workshop and lecture for free, please register below for the workshop only (max. 20 people). You only pay for the cost of the materials you use during the workshop (likely an Arduino, sensor, approx. 25 euro).

The Smart Citizen Project
The Smart Citizen project is based on geolocation, Internet and free hardware and software for data collection and sharing, and (in a second phase) the production of objects; it connects people with their environment and their city to create more effective and optimized relationships between resources, technology, communities, services and events in the urban environment. Currently it is being deployed as initial phase in Barcelona, Spain.
