The Cinekid Festival 2016 takes place from Saturday 15 until 21 October at the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam. Waag is present at the Medialab of the festival, with a special installation for kids in which they can measure their environment, the Smart Kids Lab.
The Cinekid MediaLab is a 1200m² digital playground where children and their parents can learn in an active way about the possibilities of different media alongside teachers, professionals and policymakers. More than forty different games, installations and workshops will provide an environment in which to experiment, play, learn and laugh with innovative media, art and technology.
In addition to enabling this close, creative interaction with unique media art works, the MediaLab is also the place where children get to contemplate how the worlds of film, television and new media meet. These converging interactions and relationships between all range of media types become palpable at the MediaLab, enabling visitors to see, experience and really explore the results of these latest developments for themselves.
Smart Kids Lab is part of the European Making Sense programme, that aims to explore how open source software, open source hardware, digital maker practices and open design can be effectively used by local communities to appropriate their own technological sensing tools, make sense of their environments and address pressing environmental problems in air, water, soil and sound pollution.
This project is supported by the Foundation SEC (Education and Culture) in The Netherlands and the installation at the medialab of Cinekid 2016 is also made possible by the Cinekid Festival.
