We welcome all app developers to join this mini lecture and workshop on the future of our mobile ecosystem!
For the past 10 years, mobile ecosystems have been dominated by Apple and Google. This creates vendor lock-in and limitations for app development, and it needs to change! The mobile landscape is slowly opening up and diversifying, with operating systems like e/OS and Ubuntu Touch, as well as app stores like F-Droid and Aurora Store offering open-source and ethical alternatives to Apple and Google.
But how can we grow this movement and encourage more app developers to build open-source apps that respect the autonomy of end-users? What do software developers need or want when building and distributing apps? And how can we create alternative ways for app distribution based on these needs?
This is what we are researching for the project Mobifree. In this workshop, you are invited to discuss your experiences with app development and distribution, the challenges you are facing, and what your ideal alternatives would look like.
The workshop will focus on app distribution via various app stores (e.g., App Store, Play Store, F-Droid, Aptoide) for different operating systems (e.g., iOS, Android, or Ubuntu Touch).
Are you a developer who:
- wants to explore ways of distributing that better serves the interests of you and your organisation?
- is developing apps for different mobile operating systems like iOS, Android or Ubuntu Touch?
- wants to break away from the Apple and Google hegemony?
- is interested in developing Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) apps?
Then join us on the 13th of November to help diversify the mobile landscape!
