Do It Together Bio #7: Amsterdam Yeast

19-6-13 17:00 - 21-6-13 22:00
Open Wetlab (Waag, Nieuwmarkt 4, Amsterdam

Create your own bioart project growing yeast! During this 3-day edition of Do It Together Bio with Dr. Jennifer Willet you will learn how to cultivate samples of yeast from your local environment. The exhibition takes place at the opening party of our Open Wetlab. The workshop is hosted at Amstel Park and at the Open Wetlab at the Waag on 19, 20 and 21 June.

Yeast?
Yeast are single cell organisms that are probably one of the earliest domesticated organisms in terms of human technology. The yeast species Saccharomyces Cerevisiae has been used in baking and fermenting alcoholic beverages for thousands of years. It is also extremely important as a model organism in modern cell biology research, and is the most thoroughly researched eukaryotic microorganism. Researchers have used it to gather information into the biology of the eukaryotic cell and ultimately human biology.

Grow your own yeast
This Do It Together Bio is conducted by Dr. Jennifer Willet, director of INCUBATOR: Hybrid Laboratory at the intersection of Art, Science, and Ecology of Windsor University, Canada. The goal of this workshop is for participants to cultivate samples of yeast from their local environment – to grow these samples over a few days at home – allowing participants to see organisms that are usually not visible to the naked eye. This lab serves to remind us that our civic environment is a complex ecology teeming with life in many forms.

About Do It Together Bio
During Do It Together Bio workshops you get to work with do-it-yourself biologists, scientists and artists to experiment on the intersection of art, design and biotechnology. The workshops exist of a mix between hands-on activitites, reflections and presentations of artists and scientists. During previous episodes we built new machines, such as the Bioprinter, techniques and protocols - often cheaper than the regular lab equipment. The people behind the Do It Together Bio workshops are Pieter van Boheemen (certified bio-engineer and DIY biologist) and Lucas Evers (head of Waag's Open Wetlab).
