Chronic Health: Vital changes for a caring society
In order to realise the changes that we need to stay healthy, we have to join forces. This is what the exhibition Chronic Health – vital changes for a caring society in the Embassy of Health at Dutch Design Week is all about. This exhibition shows that the transition to ‘chronic health’ is a matter of new coalitions working together. Designers can be the catalyst for this. The exhibition shows some inspiring examples of unexpected collaborations and their results.
As one of the partners in Embassy of Health, Waag is showing its project Hollandse Luchten in the Chronic Health exposition. For multiple years now, this citizen science project has been running in the province of Noord-Holland, for example in the surroundings of the Tata Steel factory. Citizens measure air quality by themselves, with low-cost sensors and training in interpreting the data. This empowers them to have informed conversations with governments and big companies, with regards to their own health and environment. Read more on Hollandse Luchten.

Is it possible to 'make' society healthy, and what are the roles of technology and design in this? During the Embassy of Health conference on Friday 22 October, two panels will engage in a debate. In the first hour, Sabine Wildevuur (Design Lab UTwente), Frank Kolkman (speculative designer) and Waag's director Marleen Stikker talk about the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare. How can we design a desired future and what are the stakes of AI in this? In the second hour, debate is about the role of the landscape in a healthy life. And how can designers contribute to a healthy landscape? After the conference, networking and drinks will follow. Join us!
