Exhibition: Makers of Noord
The Makers of Noord exhibition in Museum Amsterdam Noord puts craftsmanship in the spotlight. Get to know different makers from Noord and listen to their inspiring stories about re-use, sustainability and traditional craftsmanship.
Have you ever considered what the city would look like without shoemakers, woodworkers and car mechanics?
From large goods to small workshops, makers have always been an important part of Amsterdam Noord. Scattered throughout the district you will find individual makers and collectives, craftsmen and creative entrepreneurs. Their future in the city is under pressure, partly due to gentrification. On the other hand, the city heavily depends on these makers to cope with the energy transition and the enormous demand for housing.
The good news is that many makers are still located in Amsterdam, and in particular in Noord. Who are these makers of Noord, what do they make, and how does this contribute to the city, the neighborhood, and our lives? We invite the visitor to think about the future of local craftsmanship. Come and see, share your experiences and tell your own story.
From June 18 to August 27, 2022, the exhibition Makers of Noord can be seen in Museum Amsterdam Noord. The exhibition is open for visits from Thursday until Sunday from 13:00 – 17:00 hrs.
Finissage: Lecture Marlon Huysmans
The exhibition will be festively closed on Friday 26 August from 6PM till 8.30PM. Marlon Huysmans, co-founder of Made Up North, talks about the importance of making in the city. The Made Up North Foundation is committed to a creative maker district in Noord, and wants to strengthen the maker ecosystem in the city. We will then discuss the future of the productive city. During the closing drinks you can visit the exhibition.
Makers van Noord was created in collaboration with Museum Amsterdam Noord, Pakhuis de Zwijger and Centrinno. The exhibition can be seen in Hout- en Meubileringscollege from 29 September 2022.
