Maptime #15 Vector tiles workshop

Vector tiles are a way to deliver geographic data in small chunks to a browser or other client app. Vector tiles are similar to raster tiles but instead of raster images the data returned is a vector representation of the features in the tile.

Vector tiles make huge maps fast while offering full design flexibility. They are the vector data equivalent of image tiles for web mapping, applying the strengths of tiling – developed for caching, scaling and serving map imagery rapidly – to vector data. During this evening we will introduce you to the concept of vector tiling AND set you up for using the Amsterdam vector tiles in a small workshop. So bring your laptop to:

Create your own map!

Background
Datalab Amsterdam is already experimenting with using vector tiles instead of raster tiles for their background reference maps. Using their vector tile API we have vector tiles from the whole of Amsterdam available. Our maps will be made with Mapbox-GL-JS  and the styles edited with the Mapbox style specifications and Maputnik. We will provide a full code example for you to start with! So if you do not have any programming knowledge, you can still join this workshop!

Beginners welcome!

Do you also work with vector tiles? Please bring your project along to show it, or send a message to the organizers if you want to share your story! Have a look at https://github.com/maptime-ams/vector-tiles-workshop if you want to know more!

Maptime is BYOB (and food). Tea and coffee is provided, but you're welcome to bring your own beer, drinks, snacks or dinner to the Waag.

About Maptime AMS
Maptime Amsterdam is a map hack night hosted by Waag. We meet on a Wednesday at 18.30 to work on maps, learn about geospatial data, and teach each other the latest cartographic tools.

Maptime is, rather literally, time for mapmaking. Our mission is to open the doors of cartographic possibility to anyone interested by creating a time and space for collaborative learning, exploration, and map creation using mapping tools and technologies.

This open learning environment for all levels and degrees of knowledge offers intentional support for the beginner. Maptime is simultaneously flexible and structured: creating space for workshops, ongoing projects with a shared goal, and independent/collaborative work time.

Inspiration for Maptime comes from both hack nights and knitting circles. Both are models of spaces for people to create and learn together. Our goal is to provide this space with an open heart and without pretension. You can bring your own projects to work on, just hang out and socialize, or ask questions. Some people are experts, and some people are just getting started, but all of us are learning. So, why not do it together?
