Stadskenners meetup

This event is in Dutch.

On Thursday June 1st, Waag Futurelab, in collaboration with Harmen Zijp (Meet Je Stad en De Stadsbron), will organise de Stadskenners meetup. In this edition, we explore the role of storytelling in sharing knowledge.

Stories need data to be convincing in conversations with the government or organisations. At the same time, data and knowledge are often abstract. How do you make data understandable? And what role can storytelling and journalism play in communicating your findings? How can you use your own knowledge, measurement data, or open datasources to convey your story?

Several speakers will talk about ways to gain and share knowledge about your living environment. We will start the evening with a presentation by citizen scientist Teus Hagen. He will share the research Behoud de parel and difficulties in making impact. Then Ketil Moland Olsen of Media City Bergen shares about how self-collected sensor data can be used in reporting. Journalists from VPRO and Argos will discuss cooperation between journalists, citizens and scientists in relation to the project Thermo-staat.

In workshops, we explore the possibilities of storytelling and available tools. Digital researcher Mark Snoeck gives us an introduction OSINT research: research based on public online sources. Video and audio on social media, satellite images, blogs, databases and flight trackers; what is all publicly available on the web? And how can you use this abundance of online information and tools for your story or research?

We close the evening with a look back at Teus Hagen's research. What happens when his story is presented in different forms?

We are all city experts! As a resident, you know your environment best, but how can you use that knowledge to improve your living environment? And what role can technology or data play in this?

Previously, we organised 'de Staat van de Burgerwetenschap' (the State of Citizen Science). From now on, we'll continue as de Stadskenners.
