Artists have a unique ability to provide new perspectives on abstract issues. Artist Suzette Bousema collaborates with scientists to visualise current issues related to climate. At Waag Open on Thursday 3 October she will talk about Dead Zones: regions in the ocean that are oxygen-depleted and caused by humans. Bousema also presents her work Seaweedfilter, in which she explores the potential of seaweed farms to function as natural filters for excess nutrients in the ocean.
During the evening you will also create your own seaweed artwork with cyanotype. Cyanotype is a photographic printing technique in which the prints get a blue colour after the exposure to light.
About the artist
Suzette Bousema (NL, 1995) visualises contemporary environmental issues in collaboration with scientists. The starting point of her work is our human position in planetary conditions: the way humans intervene in nature and how we relate to the earth on an individual level. She works interdisciplinary with photography, graphics, glassblowing, weaving, sound, smell and organic materials such as seaweed.
Between 19 and 22 September 2024, you can also see Suzette Bousema's work at the exhibition Behind the Design at Waag, during GLUE Amsterdam.
