Does your doorbell know everything about your neighbours? Or about privacy laws? Which doorbell posts the funniest videos online?
One in five homes in the Netherlands, has a smart doorbell. The most popular ones are those from Amazon (Ring), Google (Nest) and Chinese Anker (Eufy). But these smart doorbells also have a downside: none of those manufacturers show a genuine initiative to adapt the design of their products to Dutch privacy laws. They store images much longer than the advice of the Personal Data Authority (AP) and they never let people know when they are filming.
During Waag Open: The smartest doorbell, we discuss recent developments around smart doorbells with designer Roos Groothuizen. Also we will design our own doorbell! What would the requirements of your smart doorbell be? Do you build a smart doorbell that is completely in line with privacy laws? A doorbell that enhances the neighbourhood feeling? Or maybe a doorbell that automatically uploads the funniest videos to social media?
