On the western edge of Amsterdam lies the Lutkemeerpolder: Amsterdam's last piece of fertile farmland. The ground that consists of clay, makes it ideally suited for not only vegetable gardening, but also for creating art. Join the workshop or come along during the Open makerspace to explore the various possibilities of this 'gold of Amsterdam' together with artist Esra Sakir.
Workshop: Discovering the clay soil in the Lutkemeerpolder
Sunday 12 May or Sunday 19 May | 12:00 - 17:00 hrs
During the first workshop, we will go into the Lutkemeerpolder together with Esra Sakir to learn about clay soil: where does clay come from? And what clay can we use for modelling? This workshop is the beginning of an artistic exploration of our relationship with soil and with food. We will collect raw clay and learn to treat it, so that the clay becomes usable for modelling. In addition, we ask everyone to bring food to share with the group. While enjoying the snacks everyone has brought, we will engage in a conversation about the environment, sustainability and food, to deepen our connection with the soil and share our favourite recipes for a healthier future.
Note: During the workshop, we will not be modelling. Clay modelling can be done during the Open makerspace.
This activity is for all clay lovers, residents of Amsterdam West & Nieuw West, artists and anyone who wants to think about the future of soil and food. Secure a place by signing up via amsterdamclay [at] gmail [dot] com. We have space for 20 participants (per day).
