Justin StewartResearch Fellow

Justin Stewart is a research fellow at Waag Futurelab. Here they work with the More-than-Planet project and collaborate with Waag makers and artists. They are specifically interested in how ecology can be communicated and shared across disciplines. Justin in particular enjoys collaborating with local artists in The Netherlands.

Justin is an evolutionary ecologist working on microbiomes. After completing their BSc and MSc in the United States, they moved to Amsterdam for a doctoral position at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam to work with dr. Toby Kiers. They focus on biodiversity mapping and plant-microbe symbiosis, mostly with mycorrhizal fungi, with a specialty in geospatial modelling. Justin holds a position as a scientist for the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks (SPUN). This work has brought them to the Amazon Rainforest, Andes, Galapagos, and Central Asia to sample fungal biodiversity in the world’s least explored ecosystem.
