Bio-Art, Ethics and Engagement

Waag collaborates with embedded researcher Louis Buckley in a project of the Creative Industries Research Centre Amsterdam (CIRCA, part of the University of Amsterdam) to evaluate Bio-Art, Ethics and Engagement.

Scientists, policy makers, and social theorists acknowledge a current crisis in the public understanding of science, with significant consequences for policy and practice. Waag in Amsterdam aims to bridge the gap between scientists, medical practitioners, and the public, by hosting Bio-Art interventions that challenge the assumptions of each of these groups and improve the dialogue between them.

Under the supervision of Dr. Manon Parry, and Lucas Evers, Head of Culture Programme and Open Wetlab, Waag, the embedded researcher will evaluate this work, to establish the most effective elements of these artistic interventions, and their mechanics of operation. The analysis will inform the creation of a new model of science communication that is multi-directional (instead of didactic, from expert to public), and that can be tailored to address many different issues across scientific disciplines. In collaboration with Curator Bart Grob of the Museum Boerhaave, and Agamyxis, a biotech company, the researcher will evaluate exhibition approaches for use by medical museums and in health and science communications. The project team will also mentor the embedded researcher in a collaborative project to demonstrate a model of science communication in an artwork co-produced with ome or more artists.

This project is a collaboration between Manon Parry (assistent professor of public history), Waag, Museum Boerhaave, Agamyxis and the embedded researcher is Louis Buckley.
