Botanical Gardens receive funding

On February 13, 2013 the Dutch Botanical Gardens Foundation received a subsidy of 2 million euro from the National Postcode Lottery for their collaborative project 'Plants for the future'. In this project, together with Waag, Dutch botanical gardens will link the data from their plant collections and share these with the public in innovative ways.

The botanical gardens have formulated a plan of action in 2012, 'Plants for the future, the botanical gardens in action!'. Especially in this moment in time, where extinction rates of many plants and animals are rapily increasing, it is of vital importance to increase the awareness of people concerning the importance of plants and nature for the future of our planet.

Nature is getting very scarce, especially in larger cities. Since 2009 more than half of the global population lives in cities, and these numbers are still rapidly increasing. The botanical gardens can provide a bridge between city and nature. The NVBT members will start in 2013 with a joint program and approach stimulating the conservation of botanical diversity for a sustainable world.
