During the Social Enterprise Day on 22 May 2015, Fairphone was announced winner of the 'Social Enterprise Award'. A social enterprise is an organization that applies commercial strategies to maximize improvements in human and environmental well-being - this may include maximizing social impact rather than profits for external shareholders.
Fairphone won the ‘Start-up’ Award. With an overwhelming majority, the jury has chosen this young Dutch company that is producing a fair mobile phone. According to the jury report, Fairphone deserves this award because it demonstrates that it is possible do it differently and better, also in a matured market. Fairphone is aiming to use conflict-free minerals and producing the phones as ‘fair’ as possible. In 2015, the second model Fairphone is expected to be launched.
The ‘Transformation Award’ went to Tesla Motors.
