End of May 2016, Fairphone reached a new milestone in its three year existence: there are now more than 100.000 copies sold: 60.000 vof the first model and 40.000 of Fairphone 2. Nearly three years ago, the young company started a crowdfunding campaign to finance the creation of their first-ever phone. They had a modest goal of selling 5,000… but they flew off the virtual shelves much faster than anticipated.
And now, with 50 employees, 100,000 Fairphone owners, a huge online community (nearly 150,000 fans and followers on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, our forum and more), plus their growing network of partners and suppliers, it’s safe to say that the dream is becoming a reality. With the Fairphone 2, Fairphone achieved the first Fairtrade gold supply chain in the electronics industry, released an open source version of their software and are nearly ready to integrate conflict-free tungsten into their supply chain.
