How do you translate values such as privacy, autonomy and inclusivity into concrete choices in software design? And how do you determine what matters to the people who will ultimately use your technology? Waag developed the Guide for Co-creation of Ethical Software to help developers incorporate the values and needs of end users into the development process from the very beginning.
The guide provides a step-by-step introduction to Value sensitive design, a design approach that takes people’s values and needs into account. It starts by identifying relevant users and other stakeholders and mapping their values. These values are then analysed, weighed and translated into concrete design choices.
It also includes practical methods, examples from the Mobifree research and answers to questions developers may encounter during the development process. The guide was developed as part of the European research project Mobifree and is based on research involving 120 end users from different user groups.
Waag explores how technology can contribute to a sustainable and just society and develops alternatives based on public values. This guide gives developers practical tools to put these values into practice when designing software.
