Are gene experiments the next disruption?
Roland van Dierendonck is a guest at the Tegenlicht meetup 'Doctoring with DNA' on 28 March at Pakhuis de Zwijger.
The next revolution will take place in biotechnology. The genetic code of our body cells, embryos and bacteria is also data and can therefore be reprogrammed. The technique is called CRISPR and with this cutting and pasting tool we can adjust the properties of each organism to our needs. With this the possibilities are endless: the elimination of diseases, the optimization of the state of our body and maximum nutritional value from food. What is the status of these developments? How do we separate science fiction from reality? And what is the new ethic?
