map out your route

The traces of the Nieuwmarkt

What are your favourite routes in Amsterdam? Everyone who lives in Amsterdam has an invisible map of the city in their mind. The way we move through the city and the choices we make are shaped by this mental map. The Amsterdam RealTime project, a diary in tracks, makes this map visible.

On the occasion of the exhibition “Maps of Amsterdam 1866-2000” in the Amsterdam Municipal Archives, Waag, Esther Polak and Jeroen Kee developed an installation that uses modern technology to explore a new method of cartography.

During Waag Open on Thursday 7 May, we will set to work drawing routes around the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood.

The workshop will be given by visual artist Esther Polak. Participants will capture each other's routes through observation and water colour painting.
