2017 will be the year of the botanic gardens in The Netherlands. On 22 April, an exhibition will start in all 24 gardens in The Netherlands about the most special plants in the collections of these gardens. Their stories will be published on the website botanischetuinen.nl, and visitors can use the newly developed app starting in April - Hortus Chat, made in collaboration with Waag - to start a conversation with the plants.
The 'Garden as lab'
In September and October 2017, the gardens will host a new installation called 'Gardens as lab', followed by a national symposium on 25 November 2017 about seeds. Stories, theatre and lectures about the importance of genetic diversity will form a fitting end of the year of the botanical gardens.
Botanic Guardians
All activities next year are organized under a new logo and identity: "Botanic guardians", the botanical gardens a keepers of biodiversity. This new brand will in the future mark all activities and initiatives of the collaborating botanical gardens.
The year of the botanical gardens is part of the project 'Planten voor de toekomst' (Plants for the future). this project is coordinated by the Nederlandse Vereniging van Botanische Tuinen (NVBT), together with Waag. The project is supported by the Nationale Postcode Loterij.
