Spinning, shoe-making, woodworking and textile printing are increasingly associated with something from the past. Not only in the Netherlands, but across Europe, it is no longer taken for granted that a craftsperson's knowledge is passed on to the next generation. Waag Futurelab is making room for ‘craftsperson 2.0’: someone who is not afraid to combine traditional crafts and modern technology. Who understands and embraces both. A person who sees the benefits of both and also has a sense of how to harness them.
Curious about what a crafts person 2.0 might look like? Come to Waag Open and experience how hacking tools create a dynamic interplay between artisanal crafts and computer-driven machines. We will start with a demonstration and then you will get to work on hacking tools and textile printing yourself.
Maker educators Aslı Aydın Aksan and Michelle Vossen will demonstrate their research on developing new tools and machine hacking. Combining age-old traditions with modern technology can create a sensory and intuitive creative interaction between the craftsperson and the digitally controlled machine. This is in contrast to the typical perception of using a machine: you enter a design, press a button and wait. There is no sense of craftsmanship in that; it is mechanical. As a machine user, how can you still be in touch with the craft process? Prepare to hack existing tools like markers, brushes, stamps for a whole new making process with a traditional touch!
