PublicSpaces
Waag is a co-initiator of the PublicSpaces Foundation, a coalition of now 70 public organisations working together on a digital ecosystem based on public values. The coalition is working towards an alternative software ecosystem that represents the public interest and is not for profit. PublicSpaces works towards a new platform for social interaction, where users are not viewed as exploitable assets or data sources, but as equal partners that share a common public interest.
Annual international conference
Every year, Waag and PublicSpaces organise an international conference. With this conference, we facilitate public debate around a healthier digital ecosystem. We get together with more than 300 people on behalf of public culture, media, education, health and government organisations, who want to contribute to a safe and accessible public space on the internet.
Since 2025, the day after the conference an additional public programma is organised at Waag: Hyperlink. Here, the themes of the conference are made accessible in a creative manner, via talks, workshops, performances and exhibitions.
PublicSpaces Conference 2026: Technology for Democracy
In 2026, the PublicSpaces Conference will take place on 4, 5 and 6 June. On Thursday 4 June, different events will be held at various locations across the city as part of the Pre-Conference. Friday 5 June is the conference day, held as usual at Pakhuis de Zwijger. On Saturday 6 June, you are welcome at Waag for Hyperlink: a packed programme of talks, workshops and an exhibition, in which we explore how we can make technology work for our democracy once again.
